March 23 Lunch and Silent Auction Is Fundraiser for Student Travel to Tanzania
HANCOCK, MI - The Finlandia University Service and Learning in Tanzania program will host a Silent Auction and Soup & Salad Luncheon on Saturday, March 23, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hancock.
The fundraiser will help seven Finlandia students travel to Tanzania this May for the university's eighth annual three-week service and learning experience near Dar es Salaam, the capital city of Tanzania.
On the lunch menu are Tanzanian vegetable soup, hearty hamburger soup, wild rice soup, and salads, desserts, and beverages.
Silent auction items include Tanzanian handicrafts, and merchandise and certificates from local businesses. A ticket must be purchased to participate in the silent auction.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a regular supporter of the annual trip, will be highlighted at the event.
Advance tickets are $7.00 each, or $8.00 at the door. Finlandia students with a valid ID attend for $5.00 per person. Children ages six to 12 attend for $5.00 each; children five years and under attend free.
Since 2006, 49 students have participated in Finlandia's Service and Learning in Tanzania program. Participating this year are senior nursing students Elizabeth Corrigan, Tricia Daavettila, Dana Hansen, Jennifer Phillips, and Lindy Vencato, senior liberal studies major Cameron Goude, and sophomore art and design student Liisa Beck.
The total cost per student is about $3,000. The students' goal is to raise half of the cost through fund raising; the remaining half is paid for out-of-pocket.
Advance tickets may be purchased from Finlandia University director of servant leadership René Johnson. Contact Johnson at 906-487-7558 or email@example.com.
