Art from the Grieving Heart Awards Ceremony is April 18, 6:30 p.m.
HANCOCK, MI - The Community Coalition on Grief and Bereavement will congratulate the winners of the 2012 Art from the Grieving Heart writing competition at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 18, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., at the Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock.
At the awards ceremony, the writing contest winners will receive prizes and each has been invited to read his or her winning short story, poem, or essay. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
The annual writing competition is intended to encourage children and adults in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties to creatively express their grief from a personal loss.
The 2012 writing contest winners were selected by members of the Coalition and Finlandia University student judges. In each of eight age divisions, the winners are:
Second Grade: Justin Gorczewicz, Houghton
Third Grade: Maryellen Trewhella, Houghton
Fourth Grade: Viviana Mora, Dollar Bay
Fifth Grade: Abby LaForest, L'Anse
Eighth Grade: Olivia Lohmann, L'Anse
Ninth Grade: LaVeyeda McClellan, Houghton
High School Division: Chuck Knuckles, Houghton
Community Division: Emelia Johnson, Houghton
The Community Coalition of Grief and Bereavement, established in 1996, serves citizens in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties. Coalition members include representatives from health care providers, churches, businesses, schools, and community agencies. Along with the writing contest, the Coalition offers support to those coping with loss and grief and organizes a variety of learning and awareness activities for children and adults.
