Finlandia University 2012 Commencement Is Sunday, April 29
HANCOCK, MI - Finlandia University 2012 Commencement exercises will take place Sunday, April 29, at 2:00 p.m., at the Paavo Nurmi Center, Hancock. The university expects to award 106 bachelor and associate degrees this spring.
A Baccalaureate worship service will take place at 10:00 a.m. the same day, Sunday, April 29, at the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock. The Rev. Dale Skogman will deliver the sermon. Rev. Skogman is an emeritus member of the Finlandia Board of Trustees and a former bishop of the Northern Great Lakes Synod (NGLS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Dawn Engman of Dollar Bay is the Finlandia University Class of 2012 Student Representative, formerly referred to as the class valedictorian. Engman will be awarded a bachelor of arts in psychology with an overall GPA of 3.907. She is a daughter of Tim and Donna Engman, Dollar Bay.
Paul O. Halme, chair of the board of the Paloheimo Foundation and executive vice president for Finlandia Foundation National, will deliver the 2012 Commencement address and receive an honorary doctoral degree.
Halme is a recipient of the Commander Order of the Lion of Finland. He is a graduate of UCLA, the Hastings College of Law, and he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps. Halme and his wife, Susan, reside in Solvang, Calif., where he is a partner in the law firm of Halme and Clark.
Michigan State Police (MSP) Inspector Stanley D. Rogers ('79) is this year's alumni speaker. Rogers is assistant district commander of the MSP Eighth District. Rogers earned an associate degree in criminal justice at Suomi College (Finlandia University) in 1979, and he is a graduate of the Northern Michigan University Regional Police Academy.
Before joining the MSP in 1989, Rogers was a Houghton County Sheriff's Department deputy and a Houghton City Police Department patrol officer. Rogers and his wife, Loriann, live in Marquette.
