Upward Bound Car Wash is Friday, June 18, at Family Video, Houghton
The UB summer students are raising funds for a one-week trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., at the conclusion of this year's four-week "mock college experience."
For more than two decades, this month-long, on-campus experience for area high school students has been a component of Finlandia's year-round Upward Bound (UB) program, which is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The summer residential program is intended to help prepare the youth for academic success and accustom them to the responsibilities of being on their own.
Along with UB staff, the 30 Upward Bound summer students will travel by bus to Colorado Springs where they will stay at a working ranch. Trip activities will include horseback riding, white water rafting, a drive to Pike's Peak, and a tour of Colorado College.
This summer's UB learning theme is environmental awareness. The students are learning about green living, recycling, and they'll construct and learn about windmills.
Upward Bound will also conduct a returnable pop can drive fundraiser Monday, July 6, in Hancock and Houghton.
