Sibelius Fest Is Week of September 23
HANCOCK, MI - The 15th annual Sibelius Academy Music Festival will be presented by Finlandia University the week of September 23 in Negaunee, Hancock, and Calumet.
This year's festival features classical/contemporary accordionist Ari Lehtonen, and the jazz/folk quintet "August Saarinen & Vuolas Virta."
On Tuesday, September 24, at 1:15 p.m., the students at Negaunee (Michigan) High School will enjoy a special Sibelius Festival performance in the high school's auditorium. The concert is open to the public; admission is $5.00 per person at the door.
Also September 24, at 7:00 p.m. a free Meet the Musicians event will be presented at the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock. The musicians will discuss their lives as musicians and present informal performances.
On Thursday, September 26, at 2:00 p.m., accordionist Ari Lehtonen will present a free concert at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hancock. A freewill offering at the concert will benefit Finlandia music programs.
Also September 26, the first-ever Sibelius Festival folk dance starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock. The dance features live music by the festival musicians. Admission is $10.00 per person at the door; Finlandia students attend free with valid university ID.
The final festival concert is Friday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m., at the Calumet Theatre. Both the accordionist and the jazz/folk quintet will perform. Tickets are $15.00 per person; $5 for students; Finlandia students attend free with valid university ID.
