Finlandia Welcomes Robert Grame, Associate Professor of Graphic Design
The Finlandia University International School of Art & Design (ISAD) is pleased to welcome full-time faculty member Robert Grame, associate professor of graphic design. He will teach courses including Graphic Design and New Media.
Grame received a master of fine arts in graphic design/visual communications and a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design, both from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.
He has taught for and directed graphic arts/visual communications programs at University of Wyoming, Kansas State University, University of South Dakota, and University of Texas at Arlington.
Grame says he is looking forward to building an agile and contemporary Graphic Design program at Finlandia that encourages students to develop work that is not only visually dynamic, but contextually appropriate.
"A teaching philosophy is a way of life," Grame notes. "I carefully and mindfully consider my role in the classroom-studio and work to establish meaningful interaction with my students at all stages of their creative and technical growth."
Also key to good teaching, Grame adds, is developing a human centered approach which challenges and nurtures students to achieve and experience learning and become independent life-long learners.
Grame is the recipient of many design awards and he has contributed to numerous national design activities for organizations including National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), U.S. National Parks Service, and many others.
His His work has been exhibited at national and international juried and invitational venues, including the Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C., and galleries and museums in Los Angeles, Calif.; Senyang, China; Cheonan, Korea; and Brno, Czech Republic.
Of accepting his position at Finlandia University Grame says, "The wonderful people, the diverse beauty of the region, and the focus of the International School of Art & Design on creating individuals that see art and design activities as socially significant opportunities all strongly appealed to me."
Grame has resided in several places throughout the Midwest. With his wife and children; he has lived in Wyoming, Kansas, South Dakota, and Texas. He and his family are excited now to settle in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They live in Houghton.
