English Language Essentials

At Finlandia, you'll study all the essential areas of English language and culture that you'll need to succeed. Topics and activities include:

English as a Second Langauge Program Sheet

Class sizes are small with no more than 10 students, so you'll get lots of one-on-one attention. Finlandia's professional language teachers use versatile, modern teaching methods. The emphasis of Finlandia's ESL certificate program is on real-life English learning through interactions with people on campus and in the local community.

In your second semester, we'll help you prepare for the TOEFL exam. Your advisor will help you arrange to take the TOEFL exam locally so you can apply for advanced study at North American universities.

American Culture

You'll get to know American culture through many social and recreational activies, such as:

  • Dinners with American families
  • Participating in student clubs
  • Field trips to area recreational, cultural and tourism sites

Now you're ready to pursue an undergraduate degree in the U.S.

After completion of the one-year English as a Second Language certificate program, you'll have the confidence and English language skills to begin an undergraduate degree. Many ESL students remain at Finlandia to earn a two- or four-year degree in business, nursing, physical therapist assistant, art and design, liberal studies, and other majors. Other students choose to transfer to another university to pursue other degree options.
