Welcome to Finnish America's pesäpaikka!
Along with the entire learning community here at Finlandia University, I wish to welcome you to FinnFestUSA 2013! It is a privilege for us to host, with so many others, this national gathering. I am convinced that our Finnish-style mid-summer celebrations, here in the historic nesting place of Finnish America, will refresh and inspire.
Finlandia's place within the Finnish American narrative is singularly distinct. With its beginning in 1896 as Suomi College, Finlandia remains the only institution of higher learning outside of Finland planted by Finns. Today, Finlandia embraces and expresses Finnish and Finnish American ideals that speak meaningfully to our diverse student population. We are the only private, residential, church-related institution of higher learning in the Upper Peninsula offering a blend of liberal arts and pre-professional degree programs and NCAA Division III athletics. A rooted and inclusive university, Finlandia serves the U.P. and beyond, with a higher education experience that is relationship-driven, holistic, and transformative.
It is my hope that your time with us in the Copper Country is rich and rewarding. On behalf of all my colleagues on campus, our students, Finlandia's Finnish Council, and our Board of Trustees, I offer to all a most sincere welcome to Finnish America's pesäpaikka, to FinnFestUSA 2013, and to Finlandia University.
