Dr. Kenneth Seaton, 2014 Commencement Speaker and Recipient of the President's Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Kenneth Seaton began his service on the Finlandia University Board of Trustees in 1963. After fifty years as a trustee, he announced his retirement. Other board members along with Finlandia employees and community members appreciate his loyal service to Finlandia University and the greater community. His involvement has always been accompanied by his charm, wit, and wisdom. It's hard to imagine the Finlandia Board of Trustees without Ken, who holds the record as its longest-serving member.
During this year's commencement exercises, Dr. Seaton will be the recipient of the President's Distinguished Service Award. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Finlandia University (Suomi College) in 1996.
In addition to his forty-five year professional history with Detroit and Northern Savings and Loan (D & N Bank) and his remarkable longevity with Finlandia University, Ken Seaton has a history of charitable and civic activities and has received many awards of recognition, including the Suomi College Lion Award in 1985. Dr. Seaton received his education in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University ('51) and lettered in track and basketball. In 1952 he entered the United States Navy and served as a seaplane pilot in Japan. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Dr. Seaton joined Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation as a mining engineer on the Minnesota Iron Range. He returned to the Copper Country in 1957 and accepted a position as an appraiser with Detroit and Northern Savings and Loan. Dr. Seaton received a diploma from the Savings and Loan Graduate School at Indiana University in 1962. In 1968 he became the president and chief executive officer for Detroit and Northern Savings and Loan.
Ken married his high school sweetheart, Lois Isaac, in 1952. They were married 59 years until her passing in 2011. Mrs. Seaton was a Suomi College (now Finlandia University) alumna and her father, Edward J. Isaac, was Suomi College president from 1952-54. Ken and Lois have five children, fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Ken continues to participate in and enjoy skiing, tennis, softball and golf.
Finlandia University is honored to have Dr. Kenneth Seaton as its commencement speaker. He will offer universal wisdom, solid advice and, no doubt, a little levity for our graduates to take with them.
