Finnish American Reporter welcomes Finnish intern Pauliina Lehto

Fifteen years ago, as a 13-year-old girl, Pauliina Lehto met two of her “American cousins” for the first time at her grandfather’s 80th birthday party in Finland. Lehto’s grandmother had made “kotikalja” (alcohol-free, home-made fermented beverage) for the occasion and one of the first things the foreign guests asked her was what it was.

Finnish American Heritage Center to host pop-up film festival

Ever since he visited his relatives in the Copper Country last spring, screenwriter and Tornio, Finland native Mikko Myllylahti has been eager to come back to the area to show the award-winning film he wrote. On Thursday, April 12, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., he’ll accomplish this mission.

March Nordic Film Series screening to feature biographical film

A movie based on the childhood experiences of its Finnish director is the March selection for the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series.

“Above Dark Waters” will show at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 at the Heritage Center’s Wiljanen Community Hall, located on the Finlandia University campus. The screenings are open to the public; donations are greatly appreciated.

February Nordic Film Series screening explores Sami heritage

The February showing of the Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) will feature “Suddenly Sami,” a documentary that follows the director’s personal quest to discover her Sami heritage.

Musician Jonathan Rundman discusses artist in residency for Heikinpäivä

Finlandia Fridays was visited this week by musician Jonathan Rundman. Rundman is the musician in residence this year for Heikinpäivä. Originally from Ishpeming, Rundman currently lives in the Twin Cities and makes a living off being a singer-songwriter.
