Nordic Film Series to celebrate Estonia’s centennial

Fresh off a year of celebrating Finland’s centennial of independence, the Finnish American Heritage Center isn’t quite done celebrating 100-year anniversaries.

This month’s Nordic Film Series feature of “The Fencer,” which is set in Estonia, will include a pair of special guests to help the FAHC honor Estonia’s 100th anniversary of independence. The movie will be shown twice on Thursday, January 11, at both 2 and 6 p.m.

Onni Nordman’s “Sauna: Divine Comedy” coming to Finlandia University Gallery

Finlandia University Gallery will present a series of artwork by Finnish-Canadian artist Onni Nordman. His exhibit titled Sauna: Divine Comedy will be on display at the Finlandia University Gallery, located in the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock, from January 18 to February 17.

Social dance class open to Finlandia students and community

There’s no better way to warm yourself on a chilly winter’s evening than to dance. And Heikinpäivä 2018 is offering plenty of opportunities to do just that – even for folks who’ve never danced before.

Nordic Film Series opens Heikinpäivä with Oscar nominee

A film by the Copper Country’s favorite Finnish director will screen at the Finnish American Heritage Center on Thursday, January 11 at 2 and 6 p.m. as this month’s installment of the Nordic Film Series.

Finlandia University Gallery announces holiday hours

Finlandia University Gallery will be closed from December 23 to January 3, 2018 for the holidays. The current 27th Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition featuring the ceramic of Kristin Pavelka will be on display through January 13. The gallery will resume regular hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8 a.m. to  4:30 p.m., Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 12 to 4 p.m. on January 4.

Celebrating the Finnish Centennial with Jim Kurtti

Finlandia Fridays was visited by another familiar face this week with guest star Jim Kurtti, the director of the Finnish American Heritage Center. Kurtti stopped by to talk about the 100th anniversary celebration of Finnish Independence.

27th Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition Kristin Pavelka: Kahvipaussi

Finlandia University Gallery will present the 27th Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition featuring the work of ceramic artist Kristin Pavelka. Her exhibit, titled Kahvipaussi will be on display at the Finlandia University Gallery. An opening reception for the public will take place at the gallery on Thursday, December 7th, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. with an artist talk beginning at 7:20 p.m.  The reception is free and open to the public. Finlandia’s Finnish American Heritage Center to host Independence gathering on December 6

It’s the most watched television program in Finland every year, and this year Copper Country residents will have the chance to tune in as well.

Finlandia University hosting Gala Concert in honor of Finland’s independence

As it has every year since Finland became independent in 1917, Finlandia University is celebrating Finland’s Independence Day. This year, since it’s Finland’s 100th anniversary of achieving independence, the university has planned a gala concert that can truly be described as a once-in-a-lifetime event.
