All students and employees are invited to the annual Finlandia University Flu Shot Clinic on Wednesday, October 3 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the conference room in Finlandia Hall.
This event brings flu shots to campus in a joint effort between Finlandia nursing students, the Finlandia Wellness Committee and the Western U.P. Health Department. Finlandia University assistant professor Ryan Bessolo, MSN-BSN-RN, always knew he wanted to advance his education in nursing.
Bessolo, a Calumet native and FinnU alumnus (’11), completed his Master’s of Science in Nursing from Western Governor’s University this year. With the new degree, Bessolo is promoted from instructor to assistant professor.

For Chris Plourde, a nursing supervisor at Norlite Nursing Center and Rehab, the opportunity to pursue her online bachelor’s of science in nursing was a long time coming. This summer, Plourde enrolled in Finlandia University’s online RN-BSN program.
“It’s always been a goal,” she said. “I’ve had setbacks along the way, but the online program is perfect because then I can work and be with my kids and still obtain my goal.”
Finlandia University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is helping to fill the growing demand for nurse practitioners in the workforce.
“Finlandia’s nursing program, which is an accredited bachelor’s degree nursing program, has a rigorous curriculum and large number of clinical hours that prepare our graduates for advanced degrees in nursing,” said Finlandia’s Nursing Department Chair Johnna Therrian. “For many of our students, obtaining their nurse practitioner (NP) license is their goal when they’re done.”
Kelly Aho dreamed of advancing her career through the online RN-BSN program. After graduating in December 2017, she earned a promotion.
When Kelly Aho (’94, ’17) first came to Suomi College in the 1990s, she wanted to be a teacher.
She graduated as an RN instead.
“I decided that nursing is very much like teaching,” said Aho. “You do a lot of patient education, and I like being with patients and their families helping them navigate their healthcare.”
Small communities need the support of its healers. With the Portage Health Foundation Scholarship, local students are given tuition aid to encourage them to go into the health sciences and in the hopes that they will remain in or return to the Upper Peninsula for their careers.
